Managing Stress in the New Year

Filed under: General Health, Sleep and Health — angefantasyfit @ 8:49 pm

In the article, Health & Beauty BreakDowns:  Managing Holiday Stress, Dr. Ronald Downs offers a few tips you can use to manage stress so it doesn’t affect your health.

To read details about each tip you can click on the link above, but here they are in a nutshell:

Take calm-down breaks
This includes:  7-8 hours of sleep per night, leisure time and breaks, quiet time to meditate or pray, massage, facials or manicure/pedicures, deep breathing from the diaphragm to oxygenate your system and slow your heartbeat

Get moving
Exercise regularly.  This helps your body, your brain, and your mood.

Eat real foods most of the time
This includes:  Eat a nutritious breakfast; choose fresh fruit, veggies, and whole grains; cut down on salt, sugar, preservatives, additives, and fat; don’t overindulge on caffeine or alcohol

Make “Nice to Do For Me” and “Need To Do For You” lists
Be realistic about what you can do.  Take care of one item at a time, but don’t procrastinate.

DARE to relieve stress
D is for Diet – make healthy choices
A is for Attitude and Awareness – learn to handle stress and accept what you can’t change
R is for Rest, Relaxation, and Relationships – make time for sleep and make alone time
E is for Exercise – get moving

We know that one way to help relieve stress is by getting a good night’s sleep.  This is so crucial for our health and well-being.  In order to sleep well you need a comfortable mattress.  Check out a natural latex mattress and an air bed to see which mattress is right for you.

Dangers Lurking Within Your Mattress

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses, Sleep and Health — angefantasyfit @ 7:46 pm

The post Dangers Hidden in Your Mattress by Rex M. caught my eye (as it was certainly meant to do).  I guessed that it would be talking about chemicals that could be in your mattress and I was right about that.

Many people look for a cheap mattress, but should you really just go for cheap when you are purchasing something you spend eight hours a day on?  We spend more time on our mattresses than any other piece of furniture.  Our body and our mind rejuvenate during sleep and a good night’s sleep is crucial to our health and well being.

Conventional mattresses can be breeding grounds for dust mites, mold, and mildew. Yuck!  Many types of mattresses are made using synthetic petrochemicals, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), potentially harmful chemicals which are sometimes used as flame retardants.

A safe 100% natural latex mattress is free of PBDEs, antimicrobial, antibacterial, dust mite free and resists mold and mildew.  If you are looking for a safe and healthy alternative to sleeping with chemicals and some really dirty stuff, a natural latex mattress is for you.  Not only that, a natural latex mattress is extremely comfortable and really durable.  In the long haul, this makes latex mattresses very cost effective.

Twelve Funky Modern Beds

When I saw 12 Cool and Stylish Modern Beds I had to click on it and check it out.  I love contemporary and modern furnishings, so I thought this would be something I would really enjoy.  It was!  (These are the beds that hold the mattresses, not the actual mattresses that go on the bed.)

My first thought when I saw the photos of the beds was that they belong in a modern art museum.  (Click the above link to see the beds.)  My second thought was that I bet they cost a fortune.  The only one I could find a price on was the Ceiling bed Bedup system which stores the bed at the ceiling and drops it down when it’s time to sleep.  I thought it would be a great idea for those who have to live in a studio apartment.  When I found out it the Bedup system started at $4300 I thought – Anyone who could afford $4300 for a bed probably isn’t staying in a studio apartment.

Two of my other favorites – the Egg Bed, which looks like something out of Star Trek or some other funky futuristic show, and the Floating Platform Bed, which I probably could have made in 8th grade shop, but I loved its simplicity.  The Jetsons have nothing on all these beds.  They are definitely futuristic, funky, and fun!

A cool bed is fun, but what is more important when it comes to comfortable sleep is your mattress.  Two specialty beds that are becoming more and more popular due to their comfort and features are the natural latex mattress and the air bed

For Slowing Mental Decline, Ginkgo Biloba is Not the Answer

Filed under: General Health — angefantasyfit @ 8:40 pm

Ginkgo Biloba Doesn’t Slow Mental Decline say the doctors involved in a six-year clinical study.  For years many people have taken the herbal supplement thinking it would make them sharper or slow mental decline in the elderly.  This study says it doesn’t.

The study already showed that ginkgo biloba does not prevent dementia or Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly and now Dr. Steven T. DeKosky and his colleagues have gone back over the data to see if ginkgo mighty slow mental decline in healthy older people, or those showing beginning signs of impairment.  The conclusion – No sign of this was found.  Ginkgo Biloba did not help with cognitive impairment any more than a placebo did.  The problem wasn’t potency either.  The study used standardized doses that are regulated and sold as medication in Germany.  (My question – What is it supposed to do as a medication in Germany??)

Bottom line:  Save your money and work on your cognition with activities that challenge your brain such as crossword puzzles and other things that require high level thinking.

Lack of sleep is something that can cause cognitive impairment at any age.  One thing that is important for a good night’s sleep is a comfortable mattress.  Check out our air bed and our natural latex mattress to learn how you can improve your sleep with a comfortable mattress.

Your Latex Mattress Questions Answered

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 6:56 pm

In Latex Mattress FAQs, author Chris Poulsen provides some helpful information about latex mattresses.  Like us, Mr. Poulsen sells latex mattresses, but by his own admission he is new to the latex mattress business.  We, by contrast, have been specialty bedding experts since 1994 and in the retail bedding business long before that.

One major issue that I have with Mr. Poulsen’s article is his “take it or leave it” (my words) attitude about 100% natural latex mattresses.  He says “There are hardly any plus points of going for all natural latex mattresses over synthetic.”  I beg to differ with that statement.  A 100% natural latex mattress will last for many years without the risk of breakdown or decay that you find with synthetic petrochemical-based latex mattresses.  The deterioration of synthetic urethane-based mattresses causes them to form impressions of your body that significantly reduce the life span of your bed.

It is also important to note that 100% botanically derived natural latex mattresses are antimicrobial, dust mite free and resist mold and mildew.  They are a great choice for those who have allergies, asthma, or are sensitive to these types of things.

Cases of a Drug-Resistant Bacteria Triples in Hospitals

Filed under: General Health, Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 5:13 pm

The article Drug-Resistant Acinetobacter Infection Triples in U.S. Hospitals immediately caught my attention.  I wanted the details on this alarming statistic.

The drug-resistant bacteria, Acinetobacter, is especially common among veterans of the Iraqi war.  Researchers found a 300% increase in cases of this bacteria that are resistant to imipenem.  This is disturbing because it suggests that this particular bacteria is becoming resistant to everything there is to fight it.

The researchers used data from 300 hospitals around the United States.  The article did not say how the hospitals studied were chosen.

Bacteria is everywhere, but is it something you want to sleep with?  Of course not!  A 100% botanically derived natural latex mattress is antimicrobial, antibacterial, dust mite free and resists mold and mildew.  It is also durable and completely recyclable.  Perhaps hospitals should look into the benefit of latex mattresses for their patients.  If I found stats like that in my hospital, I certainly would.

Coping with Low Back Pain

Filed under: Air Bed, Back Pain/Back Pain Relief, Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 1:37 pm

I came across an article entitled Understanding and Coping With Low Back Pain by someone simply listed as “Shaun.”  According to the article an estimated 26 million Americans deal with frequent or chronic low back pain.

There are many different conditions that can cause low back pain.  Some of these things include normal wear and tear due to aging, injuries or trauma, or sometimes something as simple as incorrectly lifting a heavy object, like putting a heavy suitcase into the trunk of a car.  Low back pain can also be a sign of a problem such as arthritis, osteoporosis, or a herniated disc.

Lower back pain is not a condition that should be ignored. It is important to seek medical attention to find out the cause(s) and possible treatment(s) for your low back pain.

Almost everyone experiences low back pain at some point.  The important thing to do is to make sure sure the problem doesn’t become chronic or reoccurring.

According to the article, here are some things that your health care provider may suggest to help ease your low back pain:  (You can read the details about each by clicking on the above link.)

Rest – But only for a short time.

Medication – This would be based on the type of pain and your medical history.

Exercise – Exercises that strengthen your back and abdominal muscles (core muscles) are helpful.

Massage Therapy – This can be used as part of a comprehensive plan and can be combined with physical therapy, acupuncture and medication.

Many people seek relief from their lower back pain by choosing a more comfortable mattress.  Although not cure-all for a back injury, a comfortable mattress can help relieve low back pain and even eliminate it if your mattress was the cause of your pain to begin with.  Two mattress that you should check out are an air bed and a 100% natural latex mattress.

Man Stays Awake for 11 Days

Filed under: Air Bed, Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses, Sleep and Health — angefantasyfit @ 11:22 am

When I saw the article entitled How can someone stay awake for 11 days? my first thought was – Why on Earth would someone want to stay awake that long?! The guy had to be nuts! (My opinion because I could never imagine even trying that.)

Apparently there used to be a category for this in the Guinness Book of World Records but the category is no longer acknowledged and was removed entirely in 1989 due to the fact that it is too dangerous.  A previous record acknowledged by the famous record book was 264 hours (exactly 11 days) set in 1964 by a 17-year-old American boy.  Some claim that the 1964 record was beaten by a Finnish man who went 276 hours without sleep and that the record was in the Guinness Book until the category was removed entirely in 1989.

How did Tony Wright, the English man who claims to be the new record holder, stay awake for over 11 days?  Who cares?!  The record doesn’t exist and going without sleep that long is extremely dangerous.  On the fifth day of Wright’s experiment he wrote in his blog that he saw “giggling dancing pixies and elves” in place of the text on his computer screen.  If that isn’t enough for someone to realize they are putting their brain and body in serious jeopardy, I don’t know what is!

Even small amounts of sleep deprivation are unhealthy and put a tremendous amount of strain on the body and brain.  Sleepy drivers are a dangerous threat on our roads and sleepy workers are less productive than rested ones.  In order to stay happy and healthy, people need to get enough proper sleep.  One way to improve your sleep is by making sure you are sleeping on a comfortable bed.  Two specialty beds that are rapidly gaining popularity for their comfort are the air bed and the natural latex mattress.  Check them out to see how you can sleep more easily.

Fun Winter Fitness Tips

Filed under: Exercise and Fitness — angefantasyfit @ 9:34 pm

The web site OnTopofmyDiabetes.com is the source of an article that is more fun than a snowball fight, entitled 10 Winter Fitness Tips.  The author is a diabetic with suggestions for keeping fit in the winter.

Below are the author’s ten tips with my comments:

The gym – I agree.  This is always a good suggestion if you are really going to use it.

Stationary bike or treadmill – Once again… Good suggestion unless you use them to hang your clothes on.

The exercise ball – This one is good for a limited number of activities.  It can’t replace a whole fitness routine, but you can do resistance exercises on it.

Sledding with your children – Walking back up a big hill is a great workout and a sledding is a great way to spend active time with your kids.

Building a snowman – Not the greatest workout in the world, but if the snow is deep you can get a good workout walking around in it.

Snowball fight – As long as you don’t throw ice at each others’ faces, this can be a lot of fun.  Running and dodging snowballs, as well as throwing them, is fun exercise.

Ice skating – A good workout if you know how to ice skate.  Not too much of a workout if you are just learning.  (Too much leaning, holding, and falling!)

Mall walking – Many malls are open early for walkers to get some walking in.  This is much more effective than claiming to get a workout when you are shopping.

Shoveling snow – Make sure you are prepped for this one.  Shoveling snow is not for rookies.  Many a heart attack or back ache have come from weekend warriors trying to shovel snow.

Hanging Christmas lights – I don’t see this as much of a workout, but maybe we hang lights the lazy way in this part of the country…

Bottom line – Get create with your winter workouts, especially if you are someone who is not into the cold weather (like me).  After a hard workout, make sure you get a good night’s sleep.  An air bed or natural latex mattress is just the right way to rejuvenate after a hard day of snowball fights!

Unhealthy Candy

Filed under: General Health — angefantasyfit @ 8:58 pm

Dr. Kristie Leong writes an interesting article with Avoid These Unhealthy Candies at All Costs.  Perhaps I am behind the times, but all thought all candy was unhealthy.  My definition of unhealthy is something with no nutritional value for which most candy qualifies (except small amounts of dark chocolate).  Apparently the candy Dr. Leong writes about here is super bad.  You can read more about each of these by clicking on the link above.

Here are the candies Dr. Leong doesn’t want you to eat and my comments too:

Cotton Candy – No kidding!  This is nothing but sugar.  My other gripe – It’s way to messy!

Rock Candy – Another candy that is all sugar and artificial colorings.  Dr. Leong isn’t fun at all, but I do agree with her.

Licorice Sticks – Good!  I don’t like these either.  I’m glad there are no favorites on this list so far!

Deep Fried Candy Bars – These are so out there that I don’t even know what they are.  It looks like I have been staying away from the really southern fairs and carnivals

Skittles – Rats!  I like these.  At least they have a tiny bit of juice in them…

The good news is that I think most of us can live without the candy listed above.  As long as Gummy Bears, Jolly Ranchers, and Starburst (has vitamin C) don’t make the list, I’m happy!

While we are talking about eating healthy, let’s talk about sleeping healthy.  A 100% botanically derived natural latex mattress is a great way to do that.  A natural latex mattress is antimicrobial, antibacterial, dust mite free and resists mold and mildew.  It’s way cleaner and better for you than cotton candy!  Another “better than candy” bed – Check out an air bed!

Your Sofa Choice and Back Pain

Filed under: Air Bed, Back Pain/Back Pain Relief, Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 7:46 pm

According to the blog posted on Earth Times by “dpa,” Poor sofa choice can lead to back pain.  Last year I helped a friend shop for a new sofa and can appreciate what an important choice this is.  The article states that a combination of poorly designed chairs and lack of activity can lead to back pain.  (This is according to a spinal health association in Germany, AGR.)

According to AGR, people who spend long hours in front of a TV or monitor are candidates for back problems.  I can personally attest to this.  Although lack of activity is not an issue for me, I am currently shopping for a well-designed chair that will be more comfortable when I am working in front of the computer.

AGR says that seats need to align with a person’s upper thigh and that the height of the seat should be adjustable.  The seat should also be wide enough and the back needs to be adjustable and up to shoulder height.  Built-in back lumbar support is helpful too.  (That is what I am looking for in an office chair.)

The above advice may work for an office chair, but what about a sofa, which usually serves people of varying sizes?  My advice – Get off the sofa and get moving!

Another way to help with back pain is by choosing the right mattress.  Everyone spends much more time in bed than on a sofa or in an office chair.  Two very comfortable mattresses to check out are the 100% natural latex mattress and the air bed.

Disinfectants and the Growth of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

Filed under: General Health, Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 7:05 pm

According to research published in the January issue of Microbiology, Disinfectants can promote growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.  These findings could have important implications in how the spread of infection is managed in hospitals and other health care settings.

The research was conducted at the National University of Ireland in Galway.  The researchers found that by adding increasing amounts of disinfectant to specific bacteria that the bacteria could adapt to survive the disinfectant as well as a commonly used antibiotic, even without having been exposed to the antibiotic.

The bacteria used was P. aeruginosa.  It can cause a wide range of infections, especially in those with weakened immune systems and those with diseases such as diabetes and cystic fibrosis.  The bacteria is a major cause of infections acquired at hospitals.  The fact that the bacteria could survive the disinfectant and the antibiotic could be a serious problem for hospitals.  This means that diluted disinfectants meant to kill the bacteria could actually make the bacteria immune to an antibiotic that it hasn’t even been exposed to.

Many people are looking for ways to make their lives safer and more germ-free.  One way to do this is by sleeping on a 100% botanically derived natural latex mattress.  A truly natural latex mattress is antibacterial, antimicrobial, dust mite free and resists mold and mildew.  What a healthy way to spend a third of your day!

Obesity and Heart Risk

Filed under: General Health, Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 6:42 pm

Author Bill Hendrick, in the article Heart Risk of Obesity Greater Than Thought, gives an overview of a study by scientists at the University of Bristol in the U.K. and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.  The article also states that the study shows that the risks of being underweight may have been overstated.

As a health and physical educator, this is a topic that is near and dear to my heart.  Obesity is an epidemic in this country and it is the greatest threat to health there is.  Previous studies have shown that those who are obese are at a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease.  Studies have also shown a link between being underweight and increase mortality from diseases such as lung cancer and respiratory disease.

The scientists at the above mentioned institutions now say that the risks of being overweight may have been understated and the risks of being underweight may have been overstated.  The study is published in the journal BMJ.

Obesity has been rising in this country and is a huge problem.  The problem of being underweight isn’t as much of an issue and is generally limited to those with eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia.  Diseases that are related to obesity and on the rise include diabetes, stroke, coronary heart disease, and many types of cancer.

Lack of adequate sleep can also contribute to health problems.  One thing you can do to improve your sleep is to “go green.”  A 100% natural latex mattress is antibacterial, antimicrobial, dust mite free and resists mold and mildew.  It is also one really comfortable mattress!

How to Select a Latex Mattress

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 8:29 pm

In the blog, Your Guideline On How To Select Latex Mattress, the unnamed blogger goes through the basics of selecting a latex mattress.  The blogger begins with an explanation of what natural latex is and how a natural latex mattress is made.  One good point that is made is that a good natural latex mattress can last 20 to 30 years.

Natural latex is hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, antibacterial, dust mite free, and it resists mold and mildew.  When it comes to cheaper latex mattresses, this blogger correctly points out that cheaper latex is synthetic latex made with petrochemicals.  In fact, up to 80% of latex mattresses are synthetic, not 100% natural and botanically derived.  In the long haul, the cheaper synthetic latex mattress is not cost effective since it doesn’t last nearly as long as a natural latex mattress.

Another great thing about a 100% all natural latex mattress is that it is completely recyclable when you are no longer using it (but plan on that being a very long time after your purchase).

To learn absolutely everything you need to know about the differences between synthetically made latex and 100% natural latex, check out our latex mattress page.

Natural Latex Mattress Benefits

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 4:59 pm

This post, The Benefits of Natural Latex Mattresses, posted in Groom Stuff, by pbf, on the site Plan Your Wedding Today, is a brief synopsis of natural latex and its benefits.

What a great way to start a marriage – with a comfortable 100% natural latex mattress.  That sounds like a good plan to me!

The author starts out pondering whether or not you have to choose between your life and the life of the planet.  That sounds a little dramatic to me.  Why do you have to choose?  Many people who praise the benefits of 100% botanically derived latex mattresses end their praise with a “but synthetic latex made with petrochemicals is cheaper.”

When comparing 100% natural latex with synthetic latex made with petrochemicals you simply are not comparing the same product.  100% naturally derived latex mattresses are antimicrobial, antibacterial, dust mite free, and resist mold and mildew.  In addition, people who look at price when making a decision need to look at the big picture.  Natural latex is the most durable type of latex – meaning that it will last much longer than synthetic latex and, in the long haul, be more cost effective.  Think beyond the initial purchase price when looking at synthetic versus natural latex.  There is simply no comparison.  100% natural latex is the only way to go.

Lifting Properly to Avoid Back Pain During the Holidays

Filed under: Air Bed, Back Pain/Back Pain Relief, Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 12:09 pm

The article Christmas turkeys are a pain in the ‘back’, literally gave me a chuckle but also spurred me to write about lifting properly to avoid back pain.  At one time or another, most people are guilty of lifting heavy items improperly.

This article, which is out of London, states that the British College of Osteopathic Medicine reports more back injuries after Christmas than any other time.  The BCOM claims that failing to bend the knees properly when lower the turkey into the oven can pull muscles in the back and lead to strained ligaments.  They also suggest that carrying too many heavy shopping bags also can lead to “turkey back.”

Dr. Ian Drysdale is quoted as saying, “When you’re lifting the turkey out of the oven, bend your knees and keep your back straight.  Don’t stoop or twist and you’ll avoid unnecessary pulled muscles.”  When it comes to shopping, Dr. Drysdale says, “When it comes to shopping sprees, make sure you avoid carrying all your bags in one hand – try and distribute the weight as evenly as you can.”

I think there are other factors that contribute to back pain this time of year.  They include shoveling snow, cutting down or carrying Christmas trees, reaching and over stretching to decorate trees, pulling decorations out of the attic, hanging lights, putting items together, and tossing your young relatives into the air during family visits.

One way to help ease your back pain is by sleeping on a comfortable mattress.  Two comfortable specialty beds you should look into are the air bed and the latex mattress.

Sleep Facts and Your Mattress

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses, Sleep and Health — angefantasyfit @ 11:14 am

In the Bedzine.com article Bed, Mattress and Sleep Facts the unnamed author points out some very interesting (and sometimes gross) things about our mattresses and beds.  Since there are no citations for the article, I’m not sure how many of these things are actually verifiable “facts,” but they are interesting.

Here are a few of my favorites and my comments on each:

*We use our beds more than any other item of furniture.  (This is an obvious one.)

*The average life of a mattress is 10 years.  (Our high quality latex mattresses and air beds have a 20 year warranty.)

*A comfortable bed will give you around one hour’s extra sleep a night.  (This is a huge reason to have a comfortable bed.)

*You move approximately 60 – 70 times a night with up to a dozen full body turns.  (That is amazing!  I know some people who don’t move that much in a day!)

*You grow 2 cm during the night because your spine is compressed during the day and has a chance to straighten at night.  (I’m not sure if you can call this “growing,” but is this why I feel like I look thinner in the morning?)

*85% of doctors believe there is a link between old beds and asthma.  (Very interesting.  I would love to read the research on this.)

*Your mattress can double in weight with dust over 10 years.  (Gross!  This is why people should get a natural latex mattress – it’s dust mite free.)

*10% of your pillow weight may be made up of dead dust mites.  (Time for a new pillow!)

If you don’t want to deal with all this nastiness (it’s grossing me out just writing about it!), check out a natural latex mattress.  100% natural latex is antimicrobial, antibacterial, dust mite free, and inhibits mold and mildew.

Beating Insomnia

Filed under: Air Bed, Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses, Sleeping Tips — angefantasyfit @ 8:58 pm

Beating Insomnia:  5 tips for finding that elusive shut-eye offers practical tips for sleep without medications.  Some of these tips seem like common sense, but you’d be amazed at how many of us lose track of even the obvious sometimes.

The article offers the following tips to get some sleep.  You can read them in more detail by clicking on the above link.

1.  Eat Properly.  We aren’t just talking about eating right and skipping the caffeine here.  Avoid drinking alcohol, smoking a cigarette, or eating a late night snack.

2.  Exercise and Stay Active.  Do you think your great-grandfather who worked on his farm all day had trouble sleeping?  No way!  Part of our sleep problems today are caused by our sedentary lives.  Just don’t exercise right before you go to bed.  That can keep you awake.

3.  Keep Your Room Conducive to Sleep. Keep the room cool, dark, and quiet.  Ditch the TV, radio, and other distractions that can keep you awake.

4.  Take a Hot Shower or Bath.  This helps you relax and wind down.

5.  Clear Your Mind.  Easier said than done, but with practice you can learn to clear your mind and not take your active mind to bed with you.

Another thing that can help you relax and sleep well is to have a comfortable bed.  Two of the beds that are becoming more popular for their ability to induce comfortable sleep are the air bed and the natural latex mattressAir beds and latex mattresses do wonders for those who cannot get comfortable when they hit the sack.

A Latex Mattress Promotes Better Health

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 8:39 pm

The article Using a Latex Mattress Promotes Better Health has hit the nail on the head with its title.  Using a latex mattress does, in fact, promote better health, but with one caveat.  In order to enjoy the benefits of a latex mattress, the mattress needs to be a 100% natural latex mattress.

Up to 80% of the latex mattresses sold today are made synthetically with petrochemicals.  It is important to know this when shopping for a natural latex mattress.  If you go into a latex mattress purchase without being a smart consumer, you could get ripped off.

A 100% botanically derived natural latex mattress is comfortable and supportive.  It is also antibacterial, inhibits mold and mildew, and is dust mite free.  If a natural latex mattress is truly botanically derived, it contains no chemicals or synthetic fillers.

All the qualities of a natural latex mattress make it great for those with allergies, asthma, or allergic rhinitis.  It is so much healthier than sleeping in the dust and mold that many traditional mattresses have.  A natural latex mattress is also durable, making it cost-efficient and giving you a lot of bang for your buck.

A Review of Latex Mattress Toppers

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Mattress Reviews, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 8:17 pm

In Latex Mattress Toppers Reviews, author Alan Cassidy calls latex mattress toppers “the closest thing to heaven.”  I’m not sure I’d go that far, especially for a topper.  On the other hand, a natural latex mattress — now that might be close to heaven.

Some of the latex mattress topper qualities that Mr. Cassidy writes about are the same qualities that make a latex mattress so healthy and comfortable.  Natural latex is hypoallergenic, resists mold and dust mites, and is antibacterial.  And of course, natural latex is extremely comfortable.

One thing that Mr. Cassidy does point out, but without going into much detail, is that synthetic latex has chemicals so it may not be as beneficial at 100% natural latex.  Up to 80% of all latex is synthetically made, so you have to make sure you are clear about what you are buying.  Make sure that any latex you purchase is 100% natural latex.  Whether you choose a topper or a mattress, make sure you choose 100% natural latex.

One more thing I’d like to point out — If your mattress is anything except relatively new, a topper (any type of topper) probably won’t work for you.  A topper isn’t meant to fix an old mattress, but to make an uncomfortable (but in good condition) mattress more comfortable.  If your current mattress is more than five years old, your best bet is probably a natural latex mattress, not a topper.

Back Related Problems Increasing

Filed under: Back Pain/Back Pain Relief — angefantasyfit @ 4:09 pm

The Bonati Spine Institute offers up that Reports Indicate Back Related Problems Increasing in U.S.  I don’t even have to read the article to know this is true, and there are many reasons why.

Why are back related problems increasing?  Most of the reasons are lifestyle related.  People are heavier, less fit, and have weaker core muscles (back and abdominal muscles).  Those who carry their excess weight in the middle are at a greater risk of back problems than those who carry excess weight elsewhere.

Dr. Bonati is quoted with his views on the increase in back pain and how to treat it.  He says the best way to cope with back pain is exercise and weight control and says surgery should be a last resort.

Many people with back pain issues find relief with specialty beds like a natural latex mattress or air bed.  Both are good options for those looking for a way to sleep with less pain than with a traditional mattress.

Sleep Inducing Milk

Filed under: Air Bed, Sleep and Health — angefantasyfit @ 3:04 pm

Brian Yalung introduces us to sleep inducing milk in Sleep Inducing Milk Being Tested in Taiwan.  According to the article, New Image Group is currently working on a new sleep inducing milk for those who have trouble sleeping.

According to the article, the milk has high levels of peptides (or protein fractions), which are believed (who believes?) to help people sleep.  This sleep inducing milk could be on the market by the middle of 2010.

Are you kidding me?  There better be a lot of heavy duty research behind this before people start to drink altered milk to sleep better.  I’m sure you would seem to sleep much better if your milk contained narcotics or depressants too, but that doesn’t sound like a good idea either.

What sounds better than altered milk is a comfortable bed.  Why not check out our custom designed air bed before pouring something into your body that is probably best left in the lab?

Sleep Stages

Filed under: Air Bed, Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses, Sleep and Health — angefantasyfit @ 2:36 pm

The Bedzine.com article Stages of Sleep is written by “guest.”  It seems factual, but since there are no references cited, I would say it is pleasure reading rather than non-fiction.

My interest in the stages of sleep comes from being tested in a sleep lab when I was diagnosed with a sleep disorder.  I find it fascinating that by hooking a bunch of wires and sleep machines to you that researchers can actually tell how long it takes to get to each stage of sleep, what stage of sleep you are in, and how long you stay in each stage.  Having this type of ability has allowed researchers learn so much about how we sleep and how we should sleep.

In the end, it was determined that I get to deep sleep very quickly, but that I fall asleep abnormally too fast in the day.  The researcher said, “Ahhh, you sleep so well…”  Too bad it was 2 p.m.

One thing many people have learned is that in order to sleep well, you need to have a comfortable bed.  The latex mattress, or, more specifically, the natural latex mattress is becoming more and more popular as people understand the importance of good sleep to their health and well-being.  Another comfortable bed that you should look into to improve your sleep is a custom designed air bed.

Info About Latex Mattresses

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 9:50 pm

I checked out this relatively long article entitled Looking For Info About Latex Mattresses?  Look No More.  With all due respect to the author, Chris Poulsen, I must disagree.

Mr. Poulsen does give some nice details in his article, but I disagree with his statement, “There are now not many benefits of opting for natural latex rather than man-made.”

Perhaps Mr. Poulsen doesn’t mind sleeping on a synthetic latex mattress made with petrochemicals, but those who are really looking for a 100% botanically derived natural latex mattress don’t want to sleep with chemicals.  What is the point of “all natural” if you are really just getting “pretend to be all natural?”  If you want the real thing–that is 100% all natural latex, you need to make sure you are choosing a 100% all natural latex mattress.  Since about 80% of all latex mattresses are synthetically made, you need to really look into what a latex mattress retailer is really offering you.

To really get all the info you need about synthetic latex versus 100% natural latex check out our latex mattress page.  It is so comprehensive that it really will be all the info you ever need about latex mattresses.

Organic Products For Your Home

Filed under: General Health, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 9:29 pm

I know know that “organic” and “green” are the big buzz right now, and I agree that organic is better, but this article, Organic Products for Around the House, pointed out places one can go organic that I never even dreamed of!

For example, here are the things and places where this author suggests going organic (and my comments)

Organic Skin Care – Okay, that one I have heard of…
Organic Shampoo – I get it, but haven’t done it yet…
Organic Dog Food – I may have to look into this one, but Copper loves what he eats now.
Organic Baby Formula – I vote for breastfeeding, but if you use formula, of course organic is a good idea.
Organic Mattress – Of course you want 100% natural here.  Make sure that if you are choosing a latex mattress that it is a 100% all natural latex mattress that is botanically derived.  Eighty percent of all latex mattresses are synthetically made with petrochemicals, but the manufacturers and retailers are very tight-lipped about this. Make sure you do your homework.  You can read the differences between 100% natural latex and synthetic latex by going to our latex mattress page.
Organic Milk – I use soy milk, but there is organic cow’s milk too.
Organic Make Up – Definitely better for the skin…
Organic Coffee – I don’t drink coffee.  Yuck!

Go green!

Sleep Tips for Happy Sleeping

Filed under: Sleep and Health, Sleeping Tips — angefantasyfit @ 7:45 pm

In the article, Happy Sleeping!!, the author, V.B.S. Aishwarya passes on tips for happy and healthful sleeping.  These tips include:

Stick to a schedule – Wake up and go to bed around the same time everyday.

Sleep only at night – Avoid daytime sleep if possible.  If that is not possible, limit daytime sleep to a 20 minute nap.

Exercise – Daily exercise helps you sleep better, but do not exercise too close to bedtime.  Exercising too close to bedtime will make it difficult to fall asleep.

Take a hot shower or bath – Taking a hot shower or bath helps relax you and helps you fall asleep more easily.

Avoid caffeine – Caffeine is a stimulant and will keep you awake.

Read a fiction book – This will help take you away from your stressful life and make it easier to fall asleep.

Keep the bedroom cool – Studies have shown that optimal sleeping temperature is approximately 65 degrees.

Eat a balanced diet - This is a great overall health tip, just like exercise.  Eating too much or too little will make it difficult to sleep.

Another way to sleep well is to have a comfortable mattress.  More and more people are finding comfortable sleep with a specialty mattress, like an air bed or 100% natural latex mattress.  You can learn more about how an air mattress or latex mattress can help you sleep by going to Habitat Furnishings.

Tips to Deal With Stress

Filed under: General Health — angefantasyfit @ 5:29 pm

Stress — It affects many of us and is sometimes difficult to deal with.  In Tips to Deal with Stress, the author, Dr. Rachna Khanna Singh, offers some helpful tips for dealing with stress.

Here are a few tips Dr. Singh offers for reducing stress and therefore, improving your health:

A nutritious diet at correct intervals.  This is extremely important.  Include 8 – 10 glasses of water daily too.

Exercise at least four times a week.  Enough said.  This tip alone would solve many people’s mental and physical ails.

Positive Activities.  Do what you enjoy.  Participate in dance, yoga, or whatever you enjoy doing.

Indulge in a hobby.  This one can work in conjunction with the one above.  Take 15 minutes everyday to enjoy a hobby.

Pleasurable activities – This is another that can work with the two above.  Things that give you happiness are stress relievers.  Walk the dog, socialize, enjoy the outdoors, etc.

Another thing that can help relieve stress is making sure you get enough sleep.  A comfortable bed is part of that stress reliever.  Two specialty beds that are getting more and more attention are air beds (also called air mattresses) and 100% natural latex mattresses.  You can learn more about both types of mattresses by going to Habitat Furnishings.

The Future for the All Natural Latex Foam Mattress

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 11:59 am

In Is There A Future For Organic And Foam Mattresses?, the writer ponders whether there is indeed a future for organic and foam mattresses.  My response to this is, “Are you kidding me?  Of course there is!”

More and more people are looking to remove unhealthy chemicals and synthetic products from their lives.  People are seeing the connection between chemicals and illness.  People are also wising up and realizing how important regular restful sleep is to their health.  All of this awareness of healthy living and healthy sleep has contributed to the increase in those who look for all natural and organic products, including mattresses.

Our 100% all natural latex mattress is completely all natural and botanically derived.  Up to 80% of latex mattresses are made synthetically with potentially harmful petrochemicals.  It is important to understand this and really know what you are buying when you choose a latex mattress.  To read more about the difference between synthetic latex and 100% all natural latex, check out our latex mattress page at Habitat Furnishings.

Air Bed Luxury

Filed under: Air Bed, Air Mattress — angefantasyfit @ 11:46 am

In The Luxury of Air Bed Mattresses, the writer discusses his first encounter with an air bed, which he slept on while visiting his sister’s house.  I am quite familiar with these portable type air beds.

I have an Aero Bed that I travel with (my two boys and I can all sleep on it at anyone’s house), and a portable bed with legs that I have used in my guest bedroom.  That portable bed unfolds out of its own case with wheels, but it isn’t very portable.  The case is huge.  It is good for keeping in a large storage area in your house and pulling it out when you have guests, but it is way to big to travel with.  I used to leave mine out and made up in the guest room just like a regular bed.  It is now in storage and a “real” bed with an actual bed frame and mattress has taken its place.

The writer mentions these types of air beds, as well as the old camping air mattresses of yesteryear.  He also mentions air beds that are used as one’s primary bed.  These air beds have come a long way in recent years.  We are proud to be at the forefront of the air bed market and want to share everything we know about air beds with our site visitors.  To learn more and check out our custom designed air beds, go to Habitat Furnishings.

Natural Latex Foam Mattresses

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 9:09 pm

Are we the only place that really stresses the difference between what is called a “latex foam mattress” and a 100% all natural latex mattress?  Once again I have come across an article that seeks to inform the consumer, but yet fails to point out that nearly 80% of all latex mattresses have synthetic petrochemicals in them.  We strive to help people who come to our site understand the difference between latex mattresses that are synthetic and contain petrochemicals and 100% all natural latex mattresses.

The author of Latex Foam Mattresses does make some good points about what a latex mattress offers, but he fails to really point out that “latex” may not necessarily mean that a product is natural latex.

We aim to educate our site visitors so they know the difference between synthetic latex and 100% all natural latex.  We even have a video on our latex mattress page.  Check it out and you will know the difference.

No Dust Mites With a 100% Natural Latex Mattress

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Sleeping Tips — angefantasyfit @ 8:52 pm

“A Latex Mattress Keeps Your Bedroom Dust Mite Free” or so says the headline in the article.  The problem with this headline is that it isn’t true.  A latex mattress isn’t dust mite free, but a 100% natural latex mattress is.  A 100% natural latex mattress can’t keep your bedroom dust mite free, but it can keep your mattress dust mite free.  A dust mite free mattress doesn’t eliminate dust mites from your blinds, carpet, etc.  Now that’s whole other issue!

Let’s start with what a 100% natural latex mattress can do for you.  Besides giving you a comfortable sleep, it allows you to sleep on a mattress that is naturally dust mite free, anti-bacterial, and inhibits mold and mildew.  What a great way to have a healthy night’s sleep!  You aren’t lying with your face in the blinds for eight hours every night!

To read everything you need to know about a 100% natural latex mattress versus a synthetic latex mattress check out our natural latex mattress page.

Synthetic Latex Versus Natural Latex

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 8:34 pm

I found a blog that compares synthetic latex to natural latex and declares it a “problem of choice.”  I don’t really think the choice is a problem at all.  Once you read about and understand the differences between synthetic latex and 100% all natural latex the choice is clear – Why would you purchase a synthetic latex mattress made with petrochemicals when you can have a 100% botanically derived natural latex mattress?

The blog’s writer does make a clear point that the only benefit a synthetic latex mattress has over a 100% natural latex mattress is that it is cheaper.  This is generally true, but you are comparing two items that cannot be compared.  You wouldn’t go car shopping and actually compare a Kia to a Mercedes, would you?  You can’t compare synthetic latex with 100% all natural latex either.

To really understand the differences between synthetic latex and 100% natural botanically derived latex, you need to check out our Natural Latex Mattress page.

Tips for Minimizing Stress and Sleep-Related Pain

Waterproof Mattress Pads

Filed under: Bedding — angefantasyfit @ 3:06 pm

Anyone who has had children understands this one… How do you protect your mattress from the inevitable messy spills that come from little ones or those having a problem where wetness could ruin a mattress?  The answer, as spelled out in this blog by Fran Sloan, is to get a waterproof mattress pad.

One little urine or vomit incident can ruin a mattress.  A waterproof mattress pad is a way to protect your mattress investment.  In our house, we have personally experienced everything from urine to vomit to the occasional bloody nose and our waterproof mattress pad has saved the day every time.

This blog also mentions waterproof mattresses and their disadvantages over a waterproof mattress pad.  Since there is usually a small window of time that most people require protection for their mattress, I can’t imagine buying a mattress for the sole purpose of handling life’s little wet emergencies.

If comfort and quality is what you seek in a mattress, make sure you check out our custom designed air bed or our 100% natural latex mattress.

CDC Reports Autism Disorders Increase 57% in Four Years

Filed under: General Health, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 9:23 pm

I found this article on Web MD alarming and thought it merited a closer look.  According to the CDC, the rate of autism disorders has increased 57% in just four years.  If this were a contagious disease, this would be epidemic.

Twenty years ago the rate of autism was 1 in 5000 children.  At the end of 2006 the number of children diagnosed by age eight was 1 in 110.  There is a five times higher risk for boys than for girls.

One question that is posed (but not answered) in this article that I also ask is this — Is this increase due to better and greater diagnosis or are today’s children at a greater risk for autism?  If they are at greater risk for autism, why?  If they are at greater risk, what can we do to change this?

To read this article and its citations in its entirety, go to http://www.webmd.com/brain/autism/news/20091218/autism-jumps-57percent-in-just-4-years?src=RSS_PUBLIC.

Some people think the abundance of chemicals in our daily lives contributes to the increasing incidence of autism.  If you are looking for 100% natural make sure what you are buying really is 100% natural.  Many latex mattresses are not 100% all natural latex and have synthetic petrochemicals in them.  Check out our natural latex mattress page to learn the difference.

Bedding Kickoff at the Las Vegas Market

Filed under: Bedding — angefantasyfit @ 8:11 pm

Furniture Today announces that the Las Vegas Market will salute our industry, the mattress industry, with a day of special activities.  The World Market Center is calling the events Kickoff to Bedding 2010.

The day of events will start Tuesday, February 2, at 8 a.m.  There will be round table discussion of bedding trends and what companies will be offering for 2010.

Later that day there will be a discussion presenting research on consumer views on “green” bedding.  At Habitat Furnishings, we are proud that our green 100% natural latex mattress is 100% botanically derived and completely natural.  This is in stark contrast to many other “natural” latex mattresses, 80% of which contain petrochemical synthetic latex.

Low Vitamin D May Be to Blame for Winter Back Pain

Experiencing low back pain this winter?  This article from Stop Aging Now offers up an interesting conclusion from Stewart Leavitt, PhD, Executive Director of Pain Treatment Topics.  After doing a review of research (meaning he reviewed research already done by others), Dr. Leavitt found that patients with chronic back pain usually had inadequate vitamin D levels.  When given adequate vitamin D, their pain either stopped or was relieved significantly.

Although this article suggests that supplementing with vitamin D may be a simple solution to relieving years of nagging back pain, my question would be why are these people vitamin D deficient to begin with?  Could it be that people with chronic back pain do not get outside and get enough vitamin D (from sun exposure) and then begin a cycle of vitamin D deficiency and chronic nagging back pain?  I think this is something worth looking into.

In the meantime, check with your health care provider to see if you are vitamin D deficient.  If you have chronic nagging back pain in the winter, it certainly can’t hurt to check out Dr. Leavitt’s theory.  To this article in its entirety, go to http://www.stopagingnow.com/news/news_flashes/6996/Winter-Back-Pain-Low-Vitamin-D-May-Be-to-Blame.

Great Reasons an Air Mattress is a Great Buy

Filed under: Air Bed, Air Mattress — angefantasyfit @ 5:27 pm

This blog is an example of what most people think about when they think of an air bed — a portable bed that you can take camping or pull out of a closet when you have guests.  Many people don’t know that air beds are actually one of the fastest growing segments of the specialty bed market.  More and more people are choosing air beds for their primary bed.

Why are more and more people choosing an air bed for their primary bed?  People choose air beds because they are adjustable and can be custom set from soft to firm as your needs or desires change (great for sleeping partners with different comfort needs).  An air mattress has flotation and buoyancy qualities that people love and they have a supportive feel without the “bottoming out” problems you find in a traditional mattress.  Bottom line:  Air beds offer comfort and qualities that a traditional mattress can’t match.  You can learn more about air beds by going to Habitat Furnishings.

Differences in Latex Mattresses

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 10:59 am

I came across this article in an parenting blog “Little Bit of Green” that focuses on raising children the “eco-friendly” way.  This particular blog points out the differences between latex mattresses made with petrochemicals and all natural latex mattresses made completely naturally and without potentially dangerous chemicals added.

It provides details about how a latex mattress is made and what you should look for to find a truly 100% natural latex mattress.

Our site, Habitat Furnishings has always stressed the importance of doing your homework and understanding the difference between a latex mattress that just claims to be all natural latex and one that actually is 100% all natural latex.

So many latex mattresses claim to be something they are not.  Do your homework.  Ask questions.  Get details.  You don’t want to pay a lot of money for any mattress that isn’t what it claims to be.  Go to our Natural Latex Mattress page to learn more.

3 Simple Ways to Improve Your Posture

Want three simple ways to improve your posture?  Then check out this article with a few easy tips to improve your posture.  Think good posture is just for looking good?  Wrong.  Good posture is important for keeping your bones in healthy alignment, promoting better body movement, taking strain off your joints and muscles, keeping abdominal organs functioning well, and helping to avoid back pain.

This article gives you 3 very simple things you can do each and every day to improve your posture.  They will only take a few minutes each day.

Another way to help avoid back pain is by sleeping on the proper mattress.  Two mattresses we recommend are a 100% natural latex mattress and a well-designed air bed system.  Both are great choices, depending on your wants and needs.  You can check out how to choose between and air mattress and a 100% all natural latex mattress by going to Habitat Furnishings.

Could Your Bed Be Making You Sick?

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses, Sleep and Health — angefantasyfit @ 10:09 am

I found this interesting article with a research survey that addresses the issue of sleep and your health.  This includes how much sleep people need, how they are affected by not getting enough sleep, and how an uncomfortable bed can affect your sleep and your health.

Scientists and medical researchers have long known the link between getting enough sleep and good health.  This survey and article takes this a step further and addresses how an uncomfortable bed affects your sleep, and, therefore, your overall health.

Another factor in keeping your bed primed for optimal sleep is what it is made of.  An all natural latex mattress helps keep you healthy by being anti-bacterial, preventing dust mites, and inhibiting mold and mildew growth.  Unfortunately, about 80% of latex mattresses that claim to be “all natural” actually contain petrochemical synthetic latex, not botanical natural latex.  To make sure you know the difference between synthetic latex and 100% all natural latex, check out our All Natural Latex Mattress page.

Latex Foam Mattress

Filed under: Latex Mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses — angefantasyfit @ 9:37 am

I came across this article that’s an introduction for those who are new to the notion of Latex Mattresses.  Although still considered an up-and-coming specialty mattress, Natural Latex Mattresses are quickly taking a bite out of the mattress market due to their comfort, durability, and health benefits.

Latex foam mattresses are durable and long lasting.  Since they retain their original shape and comfort for many years, they are a cost-effective mattress option.

It is important to note that not all latex mattresses are made of 100% All Natural Latex.  Many that claim to be all natural simply are not.  A 100% All Natural Latex Mattress is hypo-allergenic and anti-microbial.  This means it won’t collect mold, dust, or bacteria.  It is ideal not only for those with allergies or asthma, but for anyone who wants to sleep on a clean healthy mattress.

Check out Habitat Furnishings to read more details about the differences between synthetic latex mattresses and 100% All Natural Latex Mattresses.
